Observation Narrative
The habitat is an exposed, west facing greenstone cliff supporting a patchwork of scrub thickets, herbaceous openings and unvegetated (except for lichens) bedrock. The site is located near 300 ft. elevation, which is a transition zone for vegetation of greenstone outcrops. Present here are species such as Sorbus americana, Prunus virginiana, Deschampsia flexuosa var. flexuosa and Solidago simplex ssp. randii var. randii that are characteristic of high elevation (3200 ft.) outcrops, along with characteristic low elevation outcrop plants such as Fraxinus americana, Aster concinnus and Helianthus divaricatus.
Plot location: Shenandoah National Park. Greenstone cliff/outcrop just west of the Appalachian Trail 0.2 mi. north of Fisher's Gap. The second informal side trail to the left off the AT north of Fisher's Gap leads to the plot area.
